Need for Street

Year: 2022

”Need for Street” was an outdoor and performance-focused exhibition examining art in public spaces and attempting to “retake the streets” through art, music, performance and collaboration with activist projects and street vendors. We wanted to create a democratic space which paid tribute to the streets of the city as the only real democratic meeting ground, as the place where all differences and inequalities are levelled and exposed at the same time.

For the exhibition we had taken over a public square next to a so-called “ghetto” in Blågårdsgade, Copenhagen and the adjoining public library. In the square we set up poster art on poster stands, borrowed a demonstration truck from the local anarchist youth house to play music from, sold merch from the social project working towards safer sex work “The Red Van” and had the local falafel street vendor park his food truck. Inside the library we had a tattoo artist do flash tattoos, exhibited sculptures, moved in the performances after nighttime and showed a video work from a Brazilian artist who were supposed to do a live performance, but was unable to be physically present at the exhibition after being deported from Denmark.

We wanted to showcase art and projects that had a connection to the streets and the real lives and inequal realities that were being lived.

The participating artists were:
Clara Mosconi, Magnus Lind Nielsen, Kian Remeczki, Nadia Tehran, Nah Care, Bruna Sousa

And music by:
Vladimir Dima, Fergus Jones, Téa

”Need for Street” took place at Støberiet in Nørrebro, Copenhagen on the 31st of March 2022.
